Four generations on Shrewsbury Street

Four generations on Shrewsbury Street

More than a century ago, Leonard Turo came from Italy and put down roots on Shrewsbury Street in Worcester. Four generations of the Turo family have carried that tradition forward — the same home-style southern Italian cooking, the same corner of the city.

Turo's Market opened on Shrewsbury Street in 1910 — a neighborhood grocery rooted in the flavors Leonardo brought from southern Italy. He and his six sons built it on a simple idea: good food, made with care, was worth doing right.

In 1960, the family opened Leo's Restaurant across the street — a full dining room built on the same philosophy as the market. Word spread, and Leo's became known throughout Worcester for its honest, home-style southern Italian cooking.

In 1986, the third generation opened a larger space just off Shrewsbury Street, the address they've kept ever since. The restaurant sits at 11 Leo Turo Way, a name that says how deeply this family belongs to the neighborhood.
Still worth returning for

Still worth returning for

The Worcester Telegram & Gazette once called Leo's "a Mecca for fanciers of home-style southern Italian fare." The brick walls, exposed beams, and food on the table today still reflect what Leonard Turo brought with him from Italy.
